Inferring
We are working on the strategy of inferring. What are you inferring as you are reading? Share your thinking behind your predictions.
Hayleigh's Inference
Sophie's Inference

I'm thinking this guy discovered Jupiter. It's a very, very old picture and I know the planets were discovered a long time ago. My thinking was confirmed because the caption says that Jupiter's four biggest moons are called Galilean moons after the 17th century scientist Galileo. He discovered them.

Kylee's Inference
Jaisi's Inference-Katya's Busy Morning
Delaney's Inference
Skylar's Inference About Raptors
Katie S.'s Inference
Kennedy's Inference
I'm thinking Froggy's dad should drive instead of Froggy because kids don't know how to drive. My prediction is correct because Froggy arrives and he bumps into someone and gets hurt.
Drew H.'s Inference About Wolves
I predict wolves eat meat because all these pictures show wolves eating animals. I think they'll eat anything that moves. The book says they are carnivores or meat eating animals.
Weston's Inference About SkippyjonJones
I predict...the mom is mad that SkippyjonJones popped the pinata. When I read I changed my mind. I don't think she's mad because she picks him up and kisses him.
Kaia's Inference About Lad is Lost
I'm inferring Lad is sad and that he does not want to wear the muzzle. I thought he looked sad. I started inferring when I looked at the pictures before I started reading. The text clues said the heavy metal muzzle upset him.
Sabrina's Inference
I'm reading Fancy Nancy Loves! Loves! Loves! I'm thinking that it must be morning because Fancy Nancy is wearing pajamas. It's light outside the window so it can't be night.
Christian's Inference about Dangerous Animals
I'm inferring Lionfish sting but don't bite. I'm thinking this is true because the text clues said they sting with their sharp, poisonous spines, but don't bite.
Myora's Inference Who Would Win? Lion vs. Tiger
I infer the lion is going to win the fight. I'm thinking lions are bigger than tigers and the text clues at the end of the book said the lion's big thick fuzzy mane helped the lion to defeat the tiger.
Amber's Inference
I'm predicting the pigs are too crazy. The title is Two Crazy Pigs. I think they're going to get in all kinds of trouble and make lots of messes. I infer the pigs will have to leave the farm.
Mady's Inference about Sky & Earth
My guess is if a meteorite comes down to earth it can make a big hole and tear up your back yard. This picture shows a crater that a meteorite made.
Drew G.'s Inference
I infer that the band in The Wimpy Kid needs a new name so they'll be a little cooler. I think "Loaded Diaper" is not a cool name for a band. They have good equipment but I think they need a better name.
Mac's Inference
I'm inferring the deer are fighting and the antlers fall off. The text clues told me, "I use my antlers to push. We try to see which of us is stronger." They are really fighting. The text said the antlers just drop off in winter and new antlers will start to grow in the spring.

Cole's Inference
Last time we conferred I shared the inference I made when we went bird watching. A raptor of some kind ate an animal. We saw blood on a rock. I read to find out what kind of raptors live here in spring.
Now I'm predicting it was a red-tail hawk that ate the animal. I used the map in this book, Raptor, and the raptor locator to confirm my thinking. I discovered Red-tail hawks live in this area. It was close to an open field. There are wooden posts by the area. I won't know for sure, but that's what I'm thinking based on what I read.

Molly's Inference
I read the magazine, "Your Big Backyard" and I infer the cat in this picture is annoyed. I'm thinking about my background knowledge and what I know about cats and the picture clues. His mouth is hanging down and his eyes just look annoyed. I think he's wishing the boy would just put him down.
Jack's Inference
I read the book True or False Reptiles and I infer that the Komodo Dragon must be so big. I thought there were only small lizards. Then I read the book and I learned the Komodo Dragon is huge! An adult male can be 10 feet long!
Jacob's Inference About The Diary of a Wimpy Kid
I'm inferring that Greg and Rowley are going to fight. My background knowledge is that if people say, "FIGHT" they usually fight. When I turned the page, my thinking changed. The text said Greg didn't know how to fight so they didn't fight.

Gabe's Inference About Extraordinary Volcanoes
I infer a volcano erupts by lava rising up. Pressure builds up inside the volcano until it's ready to explode. At first I didn't know the lava rises from deep in the earth, down inside the volcano. Then I talked to my mom and my thinking changed.
Katie M.'s Inference About Frog and Toad
My inference was that Toad is just dreaming because Frog keeps getting smaller and smaller and I'm thinking that he couldn't really do that in real life. In the beginning of the story Toad was dreaming. I knew this because the chapter was called, "The Dream."

Gage's Inference About Snakes
"What I'm thinking is how is the snake going to get his skin off? I read in one book it's as easy as pulling a sock off. I'm wondering how it feels. Finally I found out. When our mealworm molted in my hand the skin got big. It cracked and then he squirmed around. I think a snake must feel the same as a mealworm. I read on this page that snakes molt their skin several times a year."
